EMBRACING CHANGE AND CRAFTING NEW MUSICAL HORIZONS - 03 August 2024
I’m writing to bring you up to speed on the latest developments in my life and career. As many of you may have noticed, there has been a noticeable pause in my public updates, and I want to take this opportunity to share the journey that has unfolded over the past few years.
A PERIOD OF PERSONAL REFLECTION AND LOSS
Currently, I’m based in Berlin, Germany, where I’m finding new energy and optimism for the future. The past few years have been deeply challenging for me on a personal level. I faced the heartbreaking loss of my father due to complications from COVID-19, as well as the passing of several other family members, including my grandfather. These losses have been profoundly impactful, requiring time for reflection and healing.
TURNING TRIALS INTO CREATIVITY
During the lockdowns, I returned to South Africa with a renewed focus on my music. This period of seclusion proved to be a crucial time for artistic growth. It allowed me to immerse myself in writing and composing new material. The result is a forthcoming album that marks a significant departure from my previous work. Drawing inspiration from my travels and experiences across various countries in 2023 and 2024, I am exploring new genres and creative directions. This new project is a reflection of the diverse cultural influences I’ve encountered and the growth I’ve experienced as an artist.
NAVIGATING THE TRANSITION TO GEMA
In tandem with my musical evolution, I’ve also made a significant administrative change. I’ve transitioned my performance rights organization from SAMRO (South African Music Rights Organization) to GEMA (Gesellschaft für musikalische Aufführungs- und mechanische Vervielfältigungsrechte) in Germany. This move was prompted by SAMRO’s documented inefficiencies and issues with royalty management, as detailed in Diana Neille’s article, "An Embarrassment of Royalties (Part One)" in the Daily Maverick. The transition to GEMA represents a crucial step in ensuring that my rights are properly managed and that my work is adequately protected.

I am enthusiastic about sharing this new music with you and reconnecting through this exciting chapter of my career. Your unwavering support during these challenging times has been a beacon of strength for me, and I am eager to showcase how these experiences have shaped my artistic expression.
