Shosholoza is more than just a song - it is a journey that bridges my South African roots with my new home in Berlin, Germany. Born and raised in South Africa, I carry the rhythms, stories, and spirit of my homeland wherever I go. Moving to Europe allowed me to explore new musical landscapes, but the essence of South Africa continues to call to me every day. In this song, that connection becomes audible: the call comes from me here in Germany, reaching out to my South African roots, and the response comes from those roots themselves, calling back to me across continents. This dialogue reflects my personal journey and the cultural bridge I aim to create through music.

Shosholoza is a traditional Nguni song, sung by miners of mixed tribal backgrounds in South Africa’s gold mines. The song combines Zulu and Ndebele words and sometimes incorporates other South African languages, reflecting the country’s rich cultural heritage. Performed in a call-and-response style, it lifted the spirits of workers as they labored in the mines. Its lyrics reference the steam trains that carried migrant miners from Zimbabwe to South Africa, but its deeper meaning is one of hope and perseverance. In Ndebele, Shosholoza literally means “go forward.” During the late 20th century, anti-apartheid activists adopted the song to inspire resilience and unity, and after apartheid ended, it became a symbol of national reconciliation and cultural pride. Its unifying power was famously showcased during the 1995 Rugby World Cup, as depicted in the movie Invictus, where South Africans of all backgrounds sang it to motivate the Springboks, symbolizing a moment of collective national pride and unity under Nelson Mandela’s leadership. Today, Shosholoza is considered an unofficial South African national anthem and a heritage song that represents the strength, hope, and unity of South Africans. Its enduring legacy continues to inspire audiences worldwide, making it a timeless example of South African music, culture, and history.

In my version, I wanted to honor this legacy while giving it a fresh perspective that reflects my personal journey and the fusion of cultures I now live in. I rewrote the arrangement, adding a new chorus and blending elements of a wide range of genres - Amapiano, Afrobeats, German Schlager, Afrikaans Sokkie, World Music, and other African musical influences - into a single cohesive track. Producing the song myself allowed me to carefully craft every element, from the beats to the harmonies to the vocal layers, ensuring the music reflects both South Africa’s vibrant traditions and my experiences in Germany. Performing all the backing vocals myself enabled me to shape a unique call-and-response dynamic: the call comes from me in Germany, and the response comes from my South African roots, creating a dialogue that mirrors the connection between past and present, home and abroad.

This new reimagined arrangement also reflects my desire to make Shosholoza accessible to a broader audience, including listeners familiar with German Schlager, while still celebrating the rich diversity of South African music and culture. By blending these genres and bringing my own interpretation, the track becomes a bridge across continents and communities, inviting everyone to experience the power of unity through music.

Shosholoza is a celebration of heritage, connection, and the enduring power of music to unite people across borders. It is a reflection of my personal journey, my roots, and my artistic vision. I hope it inspires you as much as it has inspired me, and I invite you to listen, feel, and share in the dialogue between past and present, between South Africa and Europe, and between the diverse cultures that have shaped who I am as an artist today.

With love,
Kobus Muller
